Superstition

One of the things that drives me most nuts about my religious mom is that she refers to people who follow other religions as "superstitious." Her religion = true. All other religions = superstitions. Raising your eyes skyward to thank "the one true Christian God" = true/normal. Raising your eyes skyward to thank another god (even if it claims to be the same God as the Christian God), or to thank "the Universe" = superstitious/crazy. I once told her that to me they all looked the same, superstition-wise, and she was appalled. APPALLED.

  1. The thought probably never occurred to her that someone else had the same viewpoint only that THEIR religion was TRUE and yet *different* from hers. Teehee, that's kind of funny that she was THAT closed minded.

  2. Gah, this is one of the things about religion that gets me every time. You're supposed to love each other and not be judgmental. But then the most religious people seem to be the ones that judge everyone who doesn't believe what they belive. Who is say which religion or belief is the "right" one?

  3. I have never though religion and superstition go together in any way - that seems so odd to me!

While I do practice a specific faith, my feeling is more of the many roads leading to the same place variety, rather than the I am right and the rest are wrong. Which maybe makes me bad at my own faith? I don't know. It is just kind of silly to me that I believe what I believe primarily because I was raised that way and it still feels right to me, but if I'd been born in another country or another family then I would have grown up believing the wrong thing? I don't think so.

  4. Yeah, it all kind of looks crazy from where I stand. Although I do love the Dalai Lama. His teachings speak to me and he is frequently saying how religion and spirituality is not necessary. All you need is compassion. I really feel that.
